Nirosoft Industries – Providing Water Solutions to a Thirsty Country

Cyprus is the third-largest island in the Mediterranean Sea and a very popular tourist destination, attracting over 2.5 million tourists per year. Cyprus is suffering from an extended drought and severe lack of fresh water to meet growing demands for drinking water.  For a water-strapped area like Cyprus, there are 2 options available:

  • Importing water (from Greece)
  • Desalinating its own natural sources (Mediterranean Sea, aquifers)

These days - both options are being implemented.

The combination of the water crisis in Cyprus, the proximity between Israel and Cyprus (only a 1 hour flight) and Nirosoft’s experience in membrane desalination plants has resulted in a series of successful opportunities for Nirosoft in the Cyprus market.

Nirosoft offers tailor-made solutions on a project-by-project basis, with system characterized by small foot-print, minimal use of chemicals, relatively low operating costs, high level of automation and control. Add this to expedited delivery times and it is easy to understand how Nirosoft systems are the optimal solution for Cyprus – and any other country / region / city or town with similar problems.

Main projects that Nirosoft is currently involved with in Cyprus:

The Moni Project:

Temporary sea water desalination plant for the supply of potable water, with a capacity of 20,000 m3 per day. Water from the Moni plant will be added to the main water supply system of Limassol and its surroundings.

The plant is being built – in a joint venture with Subsea Infrastructures of the UK – on a Build-Own-Operate-Removal (BOOR) basis for a period of 3 years.  Afterwards the plant will be dismantled and removed from the Moni Site.

Before the end of 2008 Cypriot citizens will enjoy drinking desalinated Cypriot sea water!

The Garillis Project:

Recently awarded to Nirosoft after an open tender process, this plant will be treating the water from the Garillis Aquifer in Limassol and bringing it to a quality meeting international drinking water standards.

This contract is based on a Build-Own-Operate-Transfer (BOOT) plant, for a period of 5 years, after which it shall be transferred to the Cyprus Water Development Division.

The system is designed to provide over 16 million cubic meters of drinking water over the 5 years of the contract, directly to the Limassol City water distribution system.

As with the Moni project - before Christmas 2008 the plant will be providing clean and drinkable water for all!

Nursery Project:

The water source for the nursery is an underground well, containing high levels of salinity and boron.

Nirosoft successfully designed a solution to both problems, applying reverse osmosis.

A containerized Brackish Water Reverse Osmosis system, having a capacity of 5 m3/hour, has been supplied, soon to be commissioned upon completion of installation at site.

Private Property Project:

A small SWRO system designed and manufactured by Nirosoft will provide pure and potable water for drinking and irrigation purposes at a private property.

Flow of the treated water will be 500 liter per hour, providing over 10 m3/day with continuous operation.

Commissioning is expected by the end of 2008.
